35 Christmas Decor Ideas for Above Kitchen Cabinets

Christmas Greenery & Lights

1. Keep It Simple With Cedar Garland

Cedar garland with warm white lights styled above white kitchen cabinets for simple Christmas kitchen decor.

Shop this look:

Faux cedar garland with hanging brass bells styled over a modern fireplace for simple Christmas greenery decor.

This is probably the easiest place to start.

Lay one relaxed faux cedar garland across the top of your cabinets and let a few branches fall naturally toward the front so you can actually see them from the room.

You can leave it exactly like that or add a little velvet ribbon if it feels too plain.

Honestly, sometimes greenery alone is enough.

Shop faux cedar garlands.

2. Add Warm White Fairy Lights

Warm white fairy lights with simple greenery styled above dark kitchen cabinets for cozy Christmas kitchen decor.

Shop this look:

Warm white LED fairy lights with flexible wire branches and plug-in adapter for cozy Christmas decor.

A thin strand of warm white fairy lights along the cabinet tops gives the kitchen that cozy Christmas glow without making everything feel cluttered.

This is great for if your kitchen already has a lot going on. You can skip a lot of decorations and just add lights on their own, or with a little garland.

I’d definitely get lights with a timer or remote. That way, you don’t have to climb onto a step stool every night just to turn Christmas on.

Find warm white LED fairy lights with timers.

3. Add One Big Evergreen Swag

Evergreen Christmas swag with a burgundy velvet bow, red berries and pinecones styled above white kitchen cabinets beside the refrigerator.

Shop this look:

Evergreen Christmas swag with a large red bow, red berries, pinecones and ornaments for festive holiday decor.

You don’t have to decorate the whole cabinet run.

A full evergreen swag at one end can look just as good, especially above a smaller cabinet beside the fridge or pantry.

Add a velvet bow, a few berries and some pinecones, then let that one little area be the moment.

4. Mix Eucalyptus and White Berries

Eucalyptus garland with white berries and warm white fairy lights styled above blue kitchen cabinets for subtle Christmas decor.

Shop this look:

Faux eucalyptus garland with layered green leaves for Christmas kitchen decor and year-round greenery.

If traditional pine feels a little too Christmas-tree-ish for your kitchen, try eucalyptus instead.

Faux eucalyptus with a few white berry stems and tiny warm lights looks especially pretty with white, blue or gray cabinets.

Keep the berries minimal so the greenery still does most of the work.

5. Add Dried Orange Slices

Evergreen Christmas garland with dried orange slices styled above warm wood kitchen cabinets.

Orange slices and evergreen look so good together, especially with warm wood cabinets.

You can use faux orange slices or dry your own at home in the oven or a dehydrator — both are easy. Real dried orange slices add such a pretty rustic charm, and making them can be a fun little holiday craft too.

Tuck or tie them into a pine garland and space them out so plenty of greenery still shows between them.

6. Weave Ribbon Through the Garland

Christmas garland with red-and-white gingham ribbon styled above sage green kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Red-and-white gingham wired ribbon with a matching bow for Christmas garlands and holiday decorating.
Lush and realistic pre-lit evergreen Christmas garland with warm white lights draped across a white fireplace mantel that you can easily use above the kitchen cabinets for Christmas decor.
Red-and-white striped kitchen towels folded in a stack for festive Christmas kitchen decor.

Ribbon is one of the easiest ways to make a plain garland look more finished.

Red velvet is classic, burgundy feels a little moodier, and red-and-white gingham is especially cute if you like a cozy cottage-style Christmas look.

Loosely weave the ribbon through the greenery and let it dip naturally between sections. You want it to look relaxed, not wrapped tightly around the garland.

Christmas Villages & Mini Trees

7. Add a Mini Christmas Village Above the Cabinets

Tiny illuminated Christmas village with ceramic houses, miniature trees and greenery styled above warm wood kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Illuminated white ceramic Christmas village houses with miniature bottlebrush trees and warm glowing lights.

A few little ceramic houses look ridiculously cute above kitchen cabinets, especially once they light up at night.

Group three or four together with a couple of mini trees and a little greenery around the base to make it feel cozy without getting too busy.

You definitely do not need to build an entire Christmas municipality above the cereal cupboard. Just a few houses will do!

Browse small LED ceramic Christmas houses.

8. Make a Bottlebrush Tree Forest

Green, cranberry, cream and gold bottlebrush trees with tiny warm lights above honey-oak kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Assorted bottlebrush Christmas trees in green, brown, navy, gold and white for festive holiday decorating.
Green and white bottlebrush Christmas trees in assorted sizes with snowy branches and wood bases.

Bottlebrush trees are one of the easiest things to decorate with because you can mix colors, sizes and styles without much effort.

Try forest green, cream and cranberry for a more classic look, or pink and turquoise if you want something retro.

Group them in little clusters instead of lining them up perfectly. The uneven heights make everything look much cuter.

Find assorted bottlebrush Christmas trees.

9. Add One Mini Christmas Tree

Mini Christmas tree with warm white lights in a woven basket styled above kitchen cabinets in a cozy neutral kitchen.

Shop this look:

Mini pre-lit Christmas tree with warm white lights and a burlap-wrapped base for simple holiday decor.

Sometimes one little tree is all the space needs.

Put a small faux spruce in a woven basket or simple pot and give it its own section above the cabinets.

You can add tiny battery-operated lights if you want a little glow, but it totally works plain and understated too.

Just make sure it comfortably fits under the ceiling. If the top is bent sideways, she’s too tall.

10. Make a Gingerbread Scene

Faux gingerbread houses, red bottlebrush trees and a peppermint ornament above cream kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Illuminated gingerbread Christmas village with snowy houses, gingerbread trees, miniature evergreens and warm white lights.

Gingerbread houses just make sense in a kitchen.

Group two or three faux gingerbread houses with a few peppermint ornaments and maybe one little red tree for a cute, playful setup that still feels easy to pull off.

You really don’t need much more than that.

And yes, I said faux gingerbread. The edible houses should stay somewhere within snacking distance!

11. Add Simple Wooden Houses

Scandinavian-style wooden Christmas houses with warm glowing windows, a mini evergreen tree and greenery styled above white kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Wooden Christmas village houses with bottlebrush trees and warm lights displayed above white kitchen cabinets.

Little wooden houses are such an easy way to get that cozy Scandinavian Christmas look above kitchen cabinets.

Mix natural wood with a couple of white or muted-color houses, then add one small evergreen tree and a little greenery around the base.

Keep the rest simple. The clean shapes, warm wood and soft colors are what make this look work.

12. Bring Out a Vintage Ceramic Christmas Tree

Vintage ceramic Christmas tree with colorful bulbs displayed above white kitchen cabinets, styled with evergreen branches, red berries, and small brass bells for a cozy Christmas kitchen look.

Shop this look:

Vintage green ceramic Christmas tree with colorful illuminated bulbs and a clear star topper.

Those vintage ceramic Christmas trees with the little colored bulbs are back for a reason – they’re adorable.

Put one above the cabinets and let it be the main decoration instead of surrounding it with a million other things.

And if you inherited one from your mom or grandma, even better.

Bows, Bells & Paper Christmas Decor

13. Add One Huge Velvet Bow

Oversized burgundy velvet bow attached to evergreen greenery above cream kitchen cabinets for cozy Christmas kitchen decor.

Shop this look:

Burgundy velvet Christmas bows for decorating kitchen cabinets, garlands and holiday greenery.

This might be one of my favorite ideas that is super simple to do.

A giant burgundy or red velvet bow looks gorgeous against cream cabinets, warm wood and brass hardware.

Attach it to a short piece of greenery so it feels like part of the display instead of a random bow floating above the kitchen.

If you love this look, you can repeat the same ribbon on your Christmas door decorations too.

Browse burgundy velvet ribbon.

14. Add Brass Bells

Vintage brass bells tied with burgundy ribbon and tucked into evergreen greenery above neutral kitchen cabinets for Christmas decor.

Shop this look:

Vintage brass Christmas bells tied with red velvet bows and styled with evergreen garland and red berries.

A few vintage-looking brass bells tucked into greenery give the cabinet tops a little shine without making things glittery.

Tie two or three together with ribbon and nestle them into a short swag or garland.

You don’t even need to hang them. They look just as good resting in the greenery.

15. Add Oversized Paper Stars

Oversized cream and cranberry paper stars with simple evergreen branches styled above sage green kitchen cabinets for Christmas decor.

Big paper stars work so well above kitchen cabinets because you can actually see them from across the room.

Plus, they take up no storage space, and they look so pretty and simple. You really can’t go wrong with them.

Try one large cream star with a smaller cranberry or deep green one beside it for a layered look.

Tuck a few evergreen branches underneath, and that’s basically the whole display done.

Find paper Christmas star decorations.

16. Decorate the Wall With Paper Snowflakes

Oversized white paper snowflakes displayed on the wall above warm wood kitchen cabinets for simple Christmas kitchen decor.

If the space above your kitchen cabinets is too shallow for bulky decor, use the wall instead.

A few oversized paper snowflakes can make the whole area feel festive without taking up any cabinet space.

Go bigger rather than smaller here — tiny snowflakes tend to disappear once you’re viewing them from normal eye level.

17. Hang a Felt Ball Garland

Red, green and white felt ball Christmas garland draped above vintage white kitchen cabinets in a cozy retro holiday kitchen.

Shop this look:

Red, green and white felt ball Christmas garland on a white background for festive holiday decorating.

Felt ball garland is such a cute option if you want something simple, colorful and a little playful above the kitchen cabinets.

Red, green and white keeps it Christmas-y without feeling too busy, and the soft felt texture gives it a fun retro look.

One strand is plenty. You don’t really need anything underneath it – the garland looks minimalist and playful on its own.

18. Add Accordion Paper Trees

Green, cream and rust accordion paper Christmas trees with tiny warm lights above terracotta kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Glowing paper Christmas trees in red, cream and green with warm lights for colorful holiday decor.

Accordion paper trees are cheap, adorable and collapse flat when Christmas is over, which immediately earns them bonus points.

Group three different heights together to mix it up and make it look decorative.

Forest green, cream and rust look gorgeous if you want something softer than bright red.

Vintage Christmas Decor & Things You Already Own

19. Lean a Winter Print Above the Cabinets

A landscape winter print in a gold frame with cedar and a burgundy bow above teal kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Framed “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” sign with red bows, evergreen accents, plaid backing and a vintage gold frame.

A winter landscape can make the kitchen feel festive without screaming CHRISTMAS.

Lean one lightweight framed print against the wall and add a little greenery beside it.

I absolutely love this look. It evokes a warm, vintage vibe.

Just choose something large enough to actually see from the floor.

A tiny picture six feet above your head is mostly just a mysterious rectangle that you won’t be able to see very well.

20. Bring Out Vintage Christmas Tins

Red and cream Christmas cookie tins, a miniature tree and gingham ribbon above dark green kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Decorative Twelve Days of Christmas tins in red, green and cream with vintage holiday illustrations.
Decorative Nutcracker Christmas tins in navy, cream and gold with ballerina and nutcracker illustrations.

Vintage Christmas tins are a little kitschy and that is exactly why I like them.

Group two or three above the cabinets with a small tree or some greenery.

Old cookie tins work especially well in the kitchen because they actually make sense there.

21. Decorate Baskets You Already Have

Woven baskets filled with Christmas greenery and red berries displayed above kitchen cabinets for simple holiday decor.

If you already store baskets above your cabinets, don’t move them.

Just Christmas them up!

Tuck a little faux cedar and a few berry stems into the baskets, then add a velvet bow to one.

It’s such an easy way to decorate without buying another bin of seasonal stuff.

22. Fill White Pitchers With Holly

White ceramic pitchers filled with holly and red berries above walnut kitchen cabinets.

White pitchers, crocks and jugs are great for Christmas because greenery looks so pretty against them.

Add a few short faux holly or cedar stems and let the red berries be the color.

This is especially cute in farmhouse or cottage-style kitchens.

23. Fill a Tray With Pinecones

Pinecones and cedar sprigs in a shallow wooden tray above black kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Rustic shallow wooden tray for displaying pinecones and evergreen sprigs as simple natural Christmas decor.
Natural brown pinecones for filling a wooden tray with simple evergreen Christmas decor.
Burgundy velvet Christmas ribbon with matching bow for decorating garlands, baskets and holiday greenery.

For a quieter Christmas look, keep it simple with pinecones and evergreen.

If you have pinecones in your yard or nearby, go gather a few instead of buying them. It’s free, and honestly a fun little Christmas activity to do with kids too.

Pile them into a shallow wooden tray, tuck in a few cedar or fir sprigs, and leave it at that.

It’s inexpensive, natural-looking and especially good if your kitchen already has a busy backsplash, colorful cabinets or plenty of other Christmas decor going on.

One practical note: if you bring pinecones in from outside, make sure they’re clean and dry to get the most use out of them.

24. Fill a Bowl With Extra Ornaments

A cobalt-blue bowl of red, pink and gold Christmas ornaments above white apartment kitchen cabinets.

You know those random Christmas ornaments that somehow never make it onto the tree?

Why not put them in a bowl and display them on top of the cabinets?

Use larger shatterproof ornaments in two or three colors and place the bowl above the cabinets.

It’s also one of the easiest ways to repeat your Christmas tree theme throughout the rest of the house!

Colorful & Retro Christmas Ideas

25. Make a Peppermint Christmas Display

Red-and-white light-up candy cane Christmas trees with red ornaments, greenery and a small white house styled above mint green kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Set of three red-and-white light-up candy cane Christmas trees in different sizes for playful peppermint holiday decor.

Red-and-white candy cane decor looks ridiculously cheerful in a kitchen.

Try a couple of peppermint-style trees, candy decorations or red ornaments, then add one small white house if you want to break up all the color.

I’d keep stripes as the main pattern here. Once candy canes, plaid, polka dots and gingham all join the party, things can get chaotic fast.

26. Go Full Retro Christmas

Pink and turquoise bottlebrush trees with red ornaments and silver tinsel above light gray kitchen cabinets.

If pink, turquoise and red are your Christmas colors, this is your moment.

Mix colorful bottlebrush trees with shiny ornaments and a tiny bit of silver tinsel.

Keep everything grouped together on one section of cabinets so it looks intentional rather than like Christmas exploded across the whole kitchen.

There are lots more color combinations in these pink Christmas decor ideas.

27. Display Two Large Nutcrackers

Two large Christmas nutcrackers displayed above navy kitchen cabinets with evergreen greenery, pinecones, brass bells and a burgundy velvet bow.

Two good-sized nutcrackers can decorate the entire area on their own.

Stand them side by side above one cabinet and tuck a little evergreen around their feet. A few pinecones or brass bells are plenty if you want to fill it out a bit more.

I’d choose two larger nutcrackers over six tiny ones. You can actually see their little outfits from across the room, and the larger size gives the whole display more presence.

28. Make a Woodland Christmas Scene

Two wooden deer, a small evergreen tree and pinecones above light wood kitchen cabinets.

Wooden deer, a little evergreen tree and a couple of pinecones make such a sweet Christmas display.

This looks especially good with white, cream or green cabinets.

You don’t need loose moss, fake snow or a million tiny woodland animals. A few pieces are enough to make your kitchen look festive above the cabinets.

29. Add a Lantern

A small brass lantern with an LED candle, cedar and pinecones above charcoal kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Black Christmas lantern with a glowing flameless candle, frosted evergreen, red berries, pinecone and plaid ribbon accents.

A small lantern with a flameless candle adds such a cozy glow above the kitchen cabinets at night.

Style it with a short cedar sprig and a couple of pinecones so it feels festive without turning into a whole arrangement.

Use a battery-operated LED candle with a timer instead of a real flame. It’s the safer option above kitchen cabinets, and it can switch itself on every evening without you having to climb up there.

30. Try Navy and Brass Together

Navy velvet ribbon, brass-colored stars and warm lights in cedar above blue-gray kitchen cabinets.

Christmas decor does not have to be red and green only.

Navy velvet ribbon with brass-colored stars and greenery looks gorgeous against gray, dusty blue, and light-colored cabinets.

Add a few warm lights and you have a navy Christmas display that feels festive without being overly traditional.

If you love this combination, you might also like these ideas for adding color to a gray kitchen.

Christmas Ideas for Small or Awkward Cabinet Gaps

31. Add One Christmas Sign

A small red MERRY sign with cedar above cream cabinets in a low-ceiling kitchen.

Shop this look:

Red Merry Christmas wooden sign with white lettering, natural wood frame and red gingham ribbon bow.

If the space above your cabinets is shallow, a long Christmas sign is an easy way to decorate it without taking up much room.

Choose one that’s large enough to read from across the kitchen, then tuck a little greenery or a few pinecones around one end.

I’d keep the rest pretty simple. One good sign looks intentional — three different Christmas sayings starts to feel a little bit like a gift shop.

32. Put a Mini Wreath on a Stand

An evergreen wreath on a tabletop stand with a rust velvet bow above white kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Black tabletop wreath stand displaying a Christmas wreath with red bow, pinecones and berries beside a second stand with hanging holiday ornaments.

A small wreath on a tabletop stand is a great option if you don’t want to attach anything directly to the cabinets.

Keep it simple with an evergreen wreath and one velvet bow, then let it stand on its own.

It adds a little height without needing another mini tree, village or bigger display.

33. Use Flat Christmas Houses

Short wooden house silhouettes with warm lights behind them above olive-green kitchen cabinets.

Shop this look:

Scandinavian-style wooden Christmas village houses and trees with warm glowing windows for cozy holiday decor.

Love the village idea but don’t have much clearance?

Try flat wooden or metal house silhouettes.

They give you the cozy little Christmas-town look without taking up nearly as much vertical space.

Add fairy lights behind them if you want a little glow.

34. Add Wrapped Christmas Presents

Three kraft-paper gift boxes with red and green velvet ribbons above light gray kitchen cabinets.

This is such an easy way to fill a larger empty gap above the cabinets.

Wrap a few empty boxes in the same paper, use two coordinating ribbons, and arrange them at different heights so the display feels intentional.

Kraft paper with red velvet ribbon is especially pretty.

Just keep it to a few boxes. That way, it won’t look like too many presents (aka the North Pole shipping department in your kitchen).

35. Add a Little Vintage Sled

A miniature red wooden sled with greenery and gingham ribbon above a sage-green kitchen cabinet.

Shop this look:

Vintage red Christmas sleigh decoration with black metal runners for rustic holiday decor.

A mini vintage-style sled is so cute above a short cabinet.

Add a small evergreen sprig and tie a ribbon around it, then give it enough empty space around it that you can actually see the shape.

This is another one that works really well if you like vintage or nostalgic Christmas decor.

Before You Decorate Above Your Kitchen Cabinets

This definitely does not need to be complicated, but there are a couple of things worth checking before you haul all your Christmas bins into the kitchen.

Measure the Space First

Measure the height from the cabinet top to the ceiling before buying anything.

You’ll also want to check how much of that space you can actually see from the floor.

Something might technically fit but disappear completely behind the front trim of the cabinet.

As a rough guide:

  • Very small gap: fairy lights, low greenery or flat house silhouettes
  • Medium gap: garland, bottlebrush trees, ornaments or low decor
  • Larger gap: villages, framed prints, paper stars or miniature trees
  • Cabinets that meet the ceiling: skip the top altogether and decorate somewhere else

There is absolutely no prize for forcing a Christmas village into a three-inch gap.

Pick One Main Look

This area gets cluttered very quickly.

Choose one main idea and let that lead the whole display.

Greenery and red bows. A ceramic village. Bottlebrush trees. Vintage tins.

You can combine things, obviously, but repeating two or three colors usually looks much more pulled together than putting every Christmas style you like in the same spot.

If you have a small kitchen, I’d decorate one short section rather than the entire cabinet run.

You can find more ideas for decorating without eating up your counter space in these small apartment Christmas decor ideas.

How to Attach Christmas Decor Above Cabinets

Start With Freestanding Decor When You Can

Villages, trees, bowls, trays, lanterns and framed art are easy because they can simply sit on top of the cabinets.

Make sure the entire base is supported and place everything far enough back that opening a cabinet door isn’t going to knock it forward.

Be Careful With Garland

Garland can often rest directly on the cabinet tops, but if you need to secure it, use an attachment appropriate for the surface and the weight of the garland.

Clean the area first and check the instructions for whatever hook or adhesive you’re using.

Different cabinet finishes react differently to adhesives, so I wouldn’t assume a removable strip is safe for every painted or varnished surface.

Make the Lights Easy to Use

This is where timers and remotes become your best friends.

Battery-operated fairy lights are handy if there isn’t an outlet nearby, but make sure the battery box stays somewhere you can reach it.

For plug-in lights, keep cords clear of cabinet doors, cooking areas and heat.

And test the lights before you spend twenty minutes arranging greenery around them.

Ask me how I know.

A Few Quick Safety Notes

Because this is a kitchen, keep decorations away from the range, heat, steam and appliance ventilation.

Use a proper step stool or ladder to reach the cabinet tops rather than climbing onto the counter.

And stick with flameless candles up here.

Real candles plus hard-to-reach Christmas decorations plus kitchen cabinets is not the festive adventure we’re looking for.

FAQ

What Is the Easiest Way to Decorate Above Kitchen Cabinets for Christmas?

Start with one faux garland or a small group of bottlebrush trees.

Choose one or two colors and keep the arrangement simple.

You can always add more later, but half the time you’ll step back and realize it already looks good.

What Can I Put Above Kitchen Cabinets With Very Little Space?

Try fairy lights, low greenery, felt garland, flat house silhouettes or paper snowflakes on the wall above the cabinets.

The key is choosing things you can actually see from below without stuffing oversized decor into the gap.

How Do I Put Garland Above Cabinets Without Nails?

If your cabinet tops are deep enough, you may be able to simply lay the garland across them.

If it needs to be secured, use removable hooks or attachments that are suitable for the cabinet surface and the weight of the garland.

Freestanding greenery in a tray or basket is another option if you don’t want to attach anything at all.

How Much Garland Do I Need?

Measure the actual length of the cabinet tops you want to decorate.

If you want the garland to drape or weave slightly, you’ll need a little more than the straight measurement.

I’d lay the garland out before attaching anything so you can see how full it looks.

Is Real or Faux Greenery Better Above Kitchen Cabinets?

I’d choose faux.

It doesn’t need watering, it won’t dry out and it can stay up for the entire Christmas season without you having to climb up and check on it.

Real greenery can still work, but use it somewhere you can easily monitor and remove once it starts drying out.

How Do You Keep Christmas Decor Above Cabinets From Looking Cluttered?

Pick one main decoration, stick to a small color palette and leave some empty space.

Group smaller objects together instead of spreading them across the entire cabinet run.

And if you’re unsure, take a photo from the kitchen doorway.

For some reason, clutter becomes approximately 400% more obvious in a photo.

How Do You Keep Decorations Above Kitchen Cabinets Clean?

Clean the cabinet tops before decorating and avoid placing decor right above greasy or steamy cooking areas.

Garlands, trays and larger decorations are generally much easier to dust than dozens of tiny loose pieces.

I would also skip loose glitter and fake snow up here unless you want to still be finding it next June.

Keep It Simple

My favorite Christmas decor above kitchen cabinets is usually the simplest.

Give me a cedar garland with a velvet bow, a little glowing Christmas village or a group of colorful bottlebrush trees and I’m happy.

You definitely don’t need to fill every inch of empty space.

Choose one look you love, repeat a couple of colors from the rest of your Christmas decor and leave a little breathing room.

Once the kitchen is looking festive, these Christmas bathroom decor ideas are another easy way to carry the same colors into the rest of the house.
